HILTON HEAD, S.C. (AP) - The Carolina Marsh Tacky Association is delaying its scheduled March 29 horse race until the fall.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported Tuesday (https://bit.ly/1jOwPcx ) the group has encountered schedule conflicts and a lack of race teams.

The association says it is working with the Daufuskie Island community to reschedule the race.

Marsh tackies, which are slightly smaller than standard horses, are descended from Spanish horses that were brought to the sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia in the 1500s.

A month ago, sponsor Melrose on the Beach announced it had pulled out of this year’s race because of renovations to the resort and the stables where the horses are kept.

The race was to be moved to a public-access beach between Melrose and Bloody Point Golf Club.
