BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Jefferson County coroner’s office has identified the woman who was fatally struck by a bus in downtown Birmingham.

Authorities say 25-year-old Pouneh Bahri of Centreville, Va. was hit by a MAX DART bus on 14th Avenue Tuesday afternoon and was pinned beneath the bus after it hit her.

The woman was a student at the nearby Horizons School, which specializes in teaching independent living skills to young adults with special needs.

The school’s Director Jade Carter tells AL.com that Bahri had just finished helping make soup during a cooking class and was walking back to a school-owned apartment complex two blocks away.

Police and transit officials are investigating the woman’s death. Lt. Sean Edwards tells WBRC-TV that authorities will examine speed, skid marks and other evidence in the investigation.
