HOBART, Ind. (AP) - Work has begun on a new $40 million addition at a northwest Indiana hospital.

The Times reports ( https://bit.ly/1oteyGh ) that hospital officials broke ground Wednesday on the addition at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, about 30 miles southeast of Chicago. The addition will house a surgery center and Intensive Care Unit.

The addition will add more than 113,000 square feet to the hospital. The new surgical department on the first floor will take up more than 45,000 square feet. A new 20-bed intensive care unit is being constructed on the second floor.

Hospital CEO Janice Ryba says 40,000 feet will be reserved for further expansion.

Construction is expected to be complete in summer 2015.
