MATTHEWS, N.C. (AP) - Former North Carolina Rep. Jim Gulley of Matthews has died at age 75.

Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor confirmed that Gulley died Tuesday after a long illness.

Gulley represented southeastern Mecklenburg County from 1996 until he retired in 2010.

Former Mayor Lee Myers said Gulley loved his home town, where he was elected to the town board in 1993.

Suzanne Gulley said her husband loved constituent service.

Gov. Pat McCrory said Gulley was a public servant who put the public first.

Funeral plans have not been announced.
