MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard is opening its seasonal air facilities in Michigan and Illinois as Great Lakes boaters prepare for the Memorial Day weekend.

Operations begin Friday at seasonal air facilities near Muskegon, Michigan, and Waukegan, Illinois.

Each year, crews staff the facilities to provide increased search-and-rescue capabilities and faster response times to Lake Michigan. Crews from the Detroit area operate at Muskegon County’s airport and crews from Traverse City, Michigan, operate at Waukegan’s airport.

Each station has a pair of four-person air crews and one helicopter.
