DUQUESNE, Pa. (AP) - A pregnant 15-year-old girl who was shot after opening the door of her family’s home and lost her fetus is expected to survive, her mother said Tuesday.

DaRae Delgado, who was seven months pregnant, was shot Monday by someone who knocked on the door of the Duquesne home, covered the door’s peephole and then opened fire when she answered, police said.

Delgado’s twin brother, Darrell Delgado, was in the house, in western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, at the time of the shooting.

“I heard the door, and I came to the top of the steps,” he said. “She opened the door, and I saw the sparks and gunshots go off.”

Delgado’s mother, Deanna Weams, said doctors told her the fetus apparently bore the brunt of the gunfire. She said Delgado remained hospitalized Tuesday.

Allegheny County police haven’t identified any suspects or made any arrests.

“Absent a motive, we are moving in several different directions,” Lt. Andrew Schurman said.

Investigators said the person or people who fired the shots fled the scene on foot. Police said they believe three people may have been involved in the shooting but did not disclose additional details.
