BETHEL, Alaska (AP) - Bethel residents are finally able to use their new $23 million pool and exercise facility.

KYUK reports (https://is.gd/WFlbjZ) the official grand opening is Saturday. This comes after a soft opening last weekend.

The facility is named Kuimarvik (KWEEM’-uh-vik), which is Yup’ik Eskimo for “place to swim.”

Officials hope the six-lane pool will help reduce the region’s high drowning rate.

It was funded largely by state money, but the city has added a half-percent sales tax to fund operations.
