SAN DIEGO (AP) - Vice President Joe Biden is asking San Diego to deal the middle class back in by keeping one of the hardest fought House seats in the country Democratic.

Biden on Saturday greeted volunteers and canvassers for Rep. Scott Peters at an International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers office in the final weekend before voting day.

The vice president said it’s important for the middle class that Democrats do well Tuesday in order to improve their economic fortunes and stave off Republican budget cuts.

Peters, a first-term congressman, is in a fierce fight with openly gay, Republican challenger Carl DeMaio. Both are former members of the San Diego City Council.

Dave McCulloch, a spokesman for DeMaio, said Peters has been a rubber stamp for President Barack Obama’s failed policies.
