JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (AP) - A fundraiser is being held for a group of Binghamton-area police officers planning to bike to Washington D.C. to honor a colleague killed in the line of duty.

The Press & Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton reports (https://press.sn/1DD5otQ ) that the benefit Saturday evening will help honor the memory of patrolman David Smith. The Johnson City officer died in March after being attacked by a man who grabbed his weapon and shot him twice.

Money raised in Johnson City on Saturday will help fund the planned 450-mile bike ride by officers in the spring. The bike trip by “Team Broome” will coincide with the Road to Hope Annual Memorial Bicycle Ride held each May by Law Enforcement United.
