DETROIT (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old Detroit charter high school student is in serious condition at a hospital after he was severely beaten by classmates.

The Detroit Free Press and broadcasters WXYZ and WWJ report that the boy suffered a fractured skull, brain bleeding and other head injuries. His mother says he’s expected to have jaw surgery on Saturday.

Investigators say he was attacked Wednesday at the Allen Academy and relatives say it stemmed from an earlier fight in which students tried to take his shoes.

A Detroit police spokeswoman says the department is investigating and has one student detained in connection with the case.

School officials say they are cooperating with authorities and have boosted security.
