LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Nevada Highway Patrol says a trooper fatally shot a man who was carrying a high-powered rifle while walking along Interstate 15 in Las Vegas early Saturday.

Trooper Loy Hixson says dispatchers received multiple calls about the gunman shortly after 3:30 a.m. and traffic was halted in both directions after troopers responded.

He told KSNV-TV a trooper “had to fire” at the gunman near Sahara Avenue and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Hixson says he was unsure whether the suspect fired at any vehicles.

No further details about the shooting were immediately released.

The shooting shut down the freeway in both directions for hours.

Las Vegas police are handling the investigation.
