WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A Townsend man will spend 18 months in prison for his role in a car wreck that left a 51-year-old man dead.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports (https://delonline.us/1E9Zoel ) that 23-year-old Maurice Dawkins was sentenced on Friday.

Prosecutors say Dawkins was on probation and had a suspended license when veered his Mazda 626 into a Chevy Blazer driven by 51-year-old Allan Cunha on Interstate 495 on July 26 of last year. Both cars ran off the road and down a steep embankment. Cunha died after his car flipped over and the driver’s-side roof struck a tree.

Dawkins was initially charged with second-degree vehicular homicide but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of operation of a vehicle that resulted in death.

Dawkins could not be reached for comment on Saturday.
