OKATIE, S.C. (AP) - It’s been three years in the making and now the Port Royal Maritime Center is a reality.

The $2 million center on Port Royal Sound along S.C. Route 170 between Beaufort and Hilton Head opens Saturday.

Its exhibits describe the history and the environment of the sound through displays, including photos, animal models and a 3,000-gallon fish tank. The center also includes a life-sized replica of the famous albino dolphin Snowball.

Snowball often swam in nearby St. Helena Sound before being captured and put on display at the Sequarium in Miami in 1962. Snowball was featured on the TV show “Flipper” and when the dolphin died in 1965 a replica was created.
