MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Some Vermont energy activists are encouraging people to save money and the environment by buttoning up their homes to keep the heat inside.

Saturday is the second “Button Up Day of Action.”

It’s meant to be the fall counterpart to Vermont’s successful “Green Up Day” spring cleaning event.

Easy steps include calking and weather-stripping around windows and doors. More ambitious ones can start with an energy audit and home retrofits that can make a big dent in heating bills.

Jim Merriam of Efficiency Vermont says the state has long been a leader on energy efficiency, but there’s a long way to go to meet the state’s home energy goals.
