JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a former Clayton County sheriff’s deputy who was expected to stand trial on child molestation charges has been found dead.

Jonesboro Police Chief Franklin Allen tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (https://on-ajc.com/1oDdbpV ) 42-year-old Phillip Emanuel Richards was found dead at his home Monday and authorities believe that he committed suicide. Details on the manner of Richards’ death weren’t immediately available.

Richards was accused of assaulting a 13-year-old girl who awoke during the assault, climbed through a nearby window and ran for help.

According to the Clayton County Superior Court docket, Richards’ trial was scheduled to begin Monday morning.

Richards was charged with aggravated child molestation, child molestation, aggravated sodomy and sexual battery. He was free on bond.
