HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Former Gov. Judy Martz has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Martz’s former communications director Chuck Butler says Martz was diagnosed in the past few weeks. She is receiving medical treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she and her husband Harry have a home.

The 71-year-old former governor says doctors have determined the Stage 2 cancer has not spread. Martz will remain in Arizona to undergo chemotherapy.

Higher stage numbers mean more extensive disease, with Stage 4 being the highest, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Martz says she appreciates the many people who have called, sent cards and emailed with prayers.

The Republican governor was elected in 2000 as Montana’s first and only female governor. She served one term.
