TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - The History Center of Traverse City is now closed to the public as officials organize its collection and evaluate the nonprofit’s finances.

The center will remain closed and maintain staff hours at a “bare minimum” until it finds another location or solution for a lease that’s set to expire, executive director Maddie Lundy told the Traverse City Record-Eagle (https://bit.ly/1tGf1lw ).

“One of the options the city manager suggested is to keep items in the building, but the staff can’t be in the building. How are you supposed to keep operational if you can’t be in the building?” she said.

Center board members voted in October to terminate the lease agreement for the city-owned Carnegie Building. The decision stemmed from the belief that the 14,000-square-foot building is too big and costly to operate. Staff members are now organizing its collection of about 44,000 items and trying to fundraise.

“Until the 15th, we’re paying for one staff member to remain in the building to organize items we can easily move and getting things ready if we have to move,” Lundy said.

The center is supposed to move out by Nov. 15 but the city will likely give it more time to come to find a solution, according to City Commissioner Ross Richardson.

“I think at this point the city is probably going to let things set for the time being while we try to determine what the next step is,” said Richardson, who sits on a committee that is studying the long-term future use of the Carnegie Building. “When we got the lease termination we thought they were moving into a new location, but evidently not.”

Lundy said she hopes the center can reach a temporary agreement with the city. Center officials are currently looking into two potential locations, she said.
