PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The newly expanded House Republican caucus has unanimously backed North Smithfield Rep. Brian Newberry for another term as minority leader.

The vote Wednesday was 11-0. The GOP had six seats in the 2014 session but picked up five more on Nov. 4. There will be one independent in the 75-member chamber; the rest of the seats are controlled by Democrats.

Newberry says Warwick Rep. Joe Trillo was also unanimously endorsed for another term as minority whip.

Rep. Patricia Morgan had considered seeking the minority leader post but said Wednesday it wasn’t “in the cards.” She said the GOP pickup in the House shows voters value Republican ideas.

On the Senate side, Dennis Algiere of Westerly will serve again as minority leader. Nicholas Kettle will be minority whip.
