INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indianapolis man says he feared for his life when he shot a man who broke into his home.

Police were called to the neighborhood northwest of the city’s downtown about 3 a.m. Thursday for a person shot during a burglary. Police say a 39-year-old man was found outside shot in the lower torso and taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Officers determined the man had been shot inside a nearby home.

Howard Murphy tells WISH-TV ( ) he hid in a pantry until the intruder entered the kitchen. Murphy says he and the intruder scuffled, followed by the gunshot.

Murphy says he feels bad about what happened but believed he had to protect himself.

Police say the case will be given to the Marion County prosecutor’s office for review.
