NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The Newport City Council has selected former Mayor Jeanne-Marie Napolitano to return to the post.

Napolitano was elected mayor unanimously by fellow council members during a meeting Wednesday. She will be officially elected Dec. 1 during an inauguration ceremony.

Napolitano was Newport’s first female mayor and served from 2008 to 2010.

She says she wants to tap into the strengths of her fellow council members to most effectively serve the city and its citizens.

Napolitano succeeds Harry Winthrop, who has served as mayor since 2010 and who lost his council seat in last week’s election.
