CHICAGO (AP) - Former Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne had the last laugh.

On Friday as news spread that Chicago’s only female mayor had died, news organizations scrambled to put out Byrne’s obituary. There was one problem: Some of the obituaries reported that Byrne was 80 years old when she died. Others reported she was 81.

It turns out the source of all that confusion was Byrne herself. Her daughter, Kathy, says that for years if anyone asked, Byrne would say she was born in 1934 when in fact she knew full well she was born in 1933. She simply liked the idea of people thinking she was a bit younger than she really was.

And her daughter says Byrne enjoyed seeing her little fib in print, joking that she’d “snookered them again.”
