MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A former Democratic lawmaker from Long Island who once ran for Congress has been arrested on charges he stole a bracelet and pocketbook from his ex-girlfriend.
David Mejias (meh-HEE’-uhs) was arraigned Friday in Nassau County District Court on charges of grand larceny and possession of stolen property. He pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at $2,500.
A judge also ordered Mejias to stay away from the ex-girlfriend.
Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1xF5hy1 ) says Mejias is accused of entering the woman’s East Garden City home on Thursday without permission. He allegedly took a $3,000 pocketbook and $800 bracelet.
Mejias’ attorney, Oscar Michelen (MISH’-uh-lihn), said there was no allegation of violence. He declined further comment.
Mejias, who served as a Nassau legislator from 2003 to 2009, lost a 2006 congressional race.
