CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Sen. Joe Machin of West Virginia is one of seven U.S. senators taking a fact-finding trip to Gruantanamo Bay, Cuba.
A news release from the Senate says the trip is set for Friday. It says the Democrat from West Virginia and his colleagues will review detainee facilities and detention operations, the legal status of individual detainees, and the military commissions process that is used to try detainees.
According to the release, the goal is to ensure that the government is doing everything possible to protect the safety of Americans and make ensure that tax dollars are appropriately spent.
