HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island say a driver and a passenger were killed when their vehicle crashed while fleeing police.

It happened in Hempstead at about 4 a.m. Sunday after a highway patrol officer observed a couple arguing in their parked van on Main Street and stopped to investigate.

While the officer was standing outside his vehicle, police say the driver intentionally backed into the patrol car twice and sped away.

Shortly after, police say the van crashed into another vehicle while speeding on Hempstead Turnpike.

Both victims, identified as 23-year-old Eduardo Zapata, of Westbury, and 22-year-old Jackeline Reyes, of Bellmore, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle refused medical attention.
