URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A review of data from the University of Illinois’ Urbana-Champaign campus shows salaries are increasing.

Payroll increased by about 3 percent and more people are earning $150,000 or more, The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported (https://bit.ly/1wUMXlC ). The school released salary data to media outlets in response to Freedom of Information Act requests.

Total campus payroll for the fiscal year ending in June 2015 is $631.2 million. The biggest paychecks on campus go to the Illini football and basketball coaches, while other top earners are deans and administrators.

The campus has 32 employees who earn $300,000 or more, up from 22 in fall 2012. The campus has 537 employees who earn $150,000 or more, 65 more than two years ago. The Illini athletic department has two dozen of those $150,000-plus employees and ten are on the football staff.

University administrators appear to be earning more money too. Figures show 83 members earn $150,000 or more, an increase from 65 in fall 2012.

Randy Kangas, the university’s associate vice president for planning and budgeting, said salaries tend to increase when there is turnover and positions open.

“You pay what the market is telling you,” Kangas said.

Many of the increases come from a salary program announced in the summer, Kangas said, with those raises totaling $21 million for the Urbana-Champaign campus.
