SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Providence businessman and former mayoral candidate Lorne Adrain (AY’-drun) has been elected the new board chairman of the University of Rhode Island Foundation.

Adrain is a former chairman of what was then the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education. He entered the race for mayor this year as an independent but dropped out to narrow the field and make it harder for ex-mayor and two-time felon Buddy Cianci to win.

URI Foundation President Mike Smith praised Adrain for his business expertise and philanthropic commitment

Adrain, who graduated from URI’s business school, was elected to the volunteer post at the trustees’ recent annual meeting. He takes over from Thomas Silvia, who will remain on the board.
