WHITING, Ind. (AP) - A Halloween night storm with winds gusting more than 70 mph and waves topping 20 feet high has caused significant damage to a park fronting Lake Michigan in northwestern Indiana.

The city of Whiting has barricaded entrances into Lakefront Park so crews can clear roadways and clean up damage.

The (Munster) Times reports (https://bit.ly/1tQpi3t ) waves coming off the lake were so powerful that they moved shoreline armor stones that weighed as much as 20,000 pounds.

The 26-acre park had been re-dedicated in September as part of a $48 million redevelopment initiative.

Mayor Joe Stahura says Whiting has endured high winds and strong storms in the past, but has never experienced winds powerful enough to take down so many large trees and cause as much damage as the Friday night storm.
