PHOENIX (AP) - An autopsy report released Thursday says a former Maricopa County sheriff’s deputy who killed himself by hanging left behind several suicide notes.

The report doesn’t specify the content of the notes left behind by ex-Deputy Ramon Charley Armendariz.

He was arrested in May after investigators found items belonging to others and bags of evidence at his home.

Armendariz told investigators he was innocent and implicated former colleagues on Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s immigrant smuggling squad.

Investigators are examining allegations that Armendariz was shaking down people who were in the country illegally.

About a week after his arrest, Armendariz was found dead at his west Phoenix home.

The autopsy report says there were no other significant injuries found on Armendariz’s body.
