RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - State health officials say a second child in North Carolina has died of complications from the flu.

The state Department of Health and Human Services reported the death on its website Friday.

While neither the child’s age nor identity have been released, the website reports the victim was between 5 and 17 years old and died last week.

The department said the first victim died in October, adding that the child was at risk for complications from the flu because of underlying medical conditions.

Health officials encourage people to protect themselves and their loved ones by getting a flu vaccination. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine, currently available as a nasal spray or a shot.
