CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) - Ryan Boyle ran for three touchdowns and passed for another and West Des Moines Dowling rolled past Cedar Rapids Washington 49-14 Friday night to win its second straight Class 4A state championship.

Boyle made big plays all night as Dowling (13-1) dominated on both sides of the ball in winning its fifth title overall, all since 2000.

The senior quarterback, who has committed to play at Iowa, ran 19 times for 145 yards and completed 8 of 12 passes for an additional 68 yards, including a 6-yarder to Eric Fardal for a second quarter touchdown.

Washington (13-1) trailed just 14-7 after Johnny Dobbs’ 2-yard TD run near the end of the first quarter. But Dowling ran off the next 35 points to turn the game into a rout.

In the Maroons’ final 10 games of the season, they never scored fewer than 41 points.

Boyle seems to be at his best in championship play.

He accounted for six touchdowns in last year’s title game, a 44-13 victory over Cedar Rapids Xavier, and he came up big in this one, too, scoring on runs of 1, 2 and 4 yards while directing an offense that amassed 396 yards, including 328 rushing. Washington managed only 166 yards.

Gray Gochenour added TD runs of 9 and 14 yards for the Maroons and Max Kasap scored from 22 yards out.

Dowling benefited from excellent field position all night, starting five of its seven touchdown drives in Washington territory. The Maroons’ longest drive was 64 yards and they needed only four plays to complete that one.

Landen Akers returned a kickoff 95 yards for Washington’s other touchdown. It was the first TD on a kickoff return in a 4A championship game.

Any offense Washington produced came from quarterback Reid Snitker, who ran for 78 yards on 17 carries. But Snitker was under pressure throughout the game when he tried to throw and completed only 2 of 10 passes for 6 yards.
