ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A Newark man has been sentenced to life in prison for staging a robbery that led to the death of a Somerset County woman.

A jury in May convicted 38-year-old Rashawn Bond of murder, kidnapping and robbery in the 2008 death of 35-year-old Tanya Worthy of Green Brook.

Prosecutors say Bond invited Worthy to his home, where she was accosted by several men. Prosecutors say two of them drove Worthy to her home, believing large quantities of cash were stashed there, but they soon fled with her after Worthy’s boyfriend foiled the robbery bid.

Worthy was fatally shot inside her car, which was driven to Elizabeth and set on fire with Worthy’s body inside.

Three other suspects are awaiting trial.
