NEWTON, Kan. (AP) - Senior wide receiver Layne Bieberle caught two touchdowns and dashed 45 yards for another score with 1:03 remaining to help Central Plains beat Hanover 42-30 in Kansas’ Eight-Man Division I championship game on Saturday in Newton.

Central Plains (13-0), a consolidation of former state power Claflin and Quivira Heights, won its first championship. Hanover (12-1) was bidding for its first state title since 2009.

Hanover quarterback Andrew Bruna passed for 231 yards and ran 25 times for 87 yards.

The Oilers led 22-14 at halftime.

Hanover gave itself one last chance, trailing by six points with just over a minute to play. But with Central Plains facing a third-and-11 play near midfield, Bieberle moved to quarterback, grabbed a shotgun snap and sealed the win with a 45-yard touchdown run.
