BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A Republican who represents residents of the Lockwood and Worden areas in Montana’s House of Representatives has resigned just two weeks after the general election to run a weekly newspaper.

Jonathan McNiven tells The Billings Gazette (https://bit.ly/1vxldDV ) he is leaving his post to focus on the Yellowstone County News. McNiven and and his wife bought the small paper last month.

McNiven notified Secretary of State Linda McCullough of his decision in a letter dated Wednesday.

The Yellowstone County Republican Central Committee will be asked to submit three nominees to the Yellowstone County Commission. Commissioners will make the appointment.

The 2015 Legislature convenes Jan. 5.

McNiven was first elected in 2010. He beat Democrat Tom Curry 65 percent to 35 percent in the recent election.
