WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A Guilford County man who pleaded guilty to causing a boat crash that killed a pregnant woman and her 3-year-old son has avoided prison.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports (https://bit.ly/14ZBdmu ) 54-year-old Michael Greene of McLeansville pleaded guilty to three counts of involuntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to one year of house arrest. He must pay a $500 fine and perform 50 hours of community service. Greene also can’t operate a boat for three years.

Prosecutors say Greene was driving a speedboat on High Rock Lake on May 25, 2013, when he collided with a pontoon boat.

Thirty-two-year-old Melissa Britt of Oak Ridge and her 3-year-old son William died. Her brother, Michael Chambers of Stokesdale, suffered critical head injuries.

The plea occurred after the trial started. A civil lawsuit has been settled.
