RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Prosecutors in the case of a Box Elder woman charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of a 49-year-old man say they have a videotape that shows not only hours before the crime happened, but also the exact moment the killing occurred.

The prosecution disclosed the video during a court hearing Friday, the Rapid City Journal (https://bit.ly/1y0bjbY ) reported. Authorities accuse 23-year-old Kelly Croyle of shooting and killing Dick Mashek at a mobile home in September.

“Before he was murdered, Dickey Mashek gave us the gift of the state’s key evidence,” prosecutor Lara Roetzel said Friday. “It is no secret now that this entire murder is on video.”

Roetzel said the video remains intact even though Croyle shot at the cameras after the incident.

Croyle, who has said the killing was in self-defense, has been charged with second-degree murder and an alternative charge of first-degree manslaughter. She remains in custody after her public defender, Jamy Patterson, was unsuccessful Friday at lowering her $500,000 bond.

In arguing for a lower bond, Patterson told Circuit Judge Robert Gusinsky that Croyle was a battered woman, whom Mashek had threatened with an ax and a gun right before his death.

“Not every killing is a crime,” Patterson said.

Patterson said in court she had only seen 20 minutes of the video and hinted that prosecutors are withholding evidence from the defense team. The cameras that recorded the killing were in Mashek’s bedroom, and Roetzel did not indicate why they were in that part of the home.

Roetzel said Croyle fled Mashek’s home with $18,900 in cash and the gun. Croyle was on probation for a drug charge when she was arrested in Mashek’s death.
