NEWARK, Del. (AP) - The University of Delaware is letting people pay their parking tickets with canned food instead of cash.

The News Journal of Wilmington (https://delonline.us/1tckVvO ) reports that through Dec. 12 the university will accept nonperishable food items as payment for parking citations. Officials say each item will count as $5 toward a parking citation issued on campus within the past 30 days.

The food items will be given to the Food Bank of Delaware in mid-December.

Anyone with a parking ticket may pay citations at the Parking Services office in the Perkins Student Center.

Parking violations issued by the university carry fines ranging from $20 to $100 and are due within 15 days of the violation date.
