RAYMONDVILLE, Texas (AP) - A South Texas sheriff’s deputy has died after his patrol vehicle went out of control and rolled.

Willacy County sheriff’s Sgt. Alex Martinez of Raymondville died after the SUV wreck Friday afternoon near Raymondville. Sheriff Larry Spence says the 52-year-old former Raymondville police chief was transported to a hospital in Harlingen, where he died.

Spence says the single-vehicle accident happened as Martinez was driving back to the sheriff’s department. Texas troopers are helping investigate.

Martinez served as police chief in Raymondville from 1999 to 2004. He’d been a sheriff’s deputy for nearly a year.
