SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) - A professor at a western Ohio university has been named Ohio professor of the year for 2014 by a program that recognizes excellence in undergraduate education around the country.

Wittenberg University physics professor Elizabeth George was nominated for the award by faculty colleagues, administrators and former students. George also heads the physics department.

The university says the U.S. Professor of the Year program selected George. That program is sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and administered by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

The awards recognize professors for their influence on teaching and commitment to undergraduate students. Thirty state winners and one from the District of Columbia were recognized this year. Four national winners were chosen as U.S. Professors of the Year.
