SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) - Montgomery County police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that left three people dead and sent five others to local hospitals.

The police department says officers responded around 3:20 a.m. Sunday to a report of a collision on East-West Highway in Silver Spring. Officers declared three passengers of a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban dead at the scene including a 21-year-old male, a 24-year-old female and a female whose identity has not been confirmed.

Police say a 32-year-old male passenger was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Four others appear to have non-life-threatening injuries.

The police department says it’s exploring the possibility that speed and alcohol may have played a role in the collision. Police say the Suburban struck a tree after leaving the roadway and came to rest on its side.
