RUSTON, La. (AP) - Pee-Wee Garnder scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including four in the final minute, as American beat Morehead State 51-46 in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Louisiana Tech on Sunday.

Gardner’s layup with 48 seconds left ended nearly 2 scoreless minutes for both teams and his pair of free throws 12 seconds later gave American (3-2) a 48-42 lead.

Morehead (2-4) battled back with a 4-1 run and forced a five-second violation to have the ball down three with 14 seconds to go. Angelo Warner’s missed his 3-point attempt with 10 seconds left and Jesse Reed made two more free throws for American to cap the scoring.

Reed and John Schoof added 10 points each for American.

Karam Mashour had 11 points and Billy Reader added 10 for Morehead, which could not overcome 22 turnovers.
