WASHINGTON (AP) - An autopsy will be conducted on the body of former District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry.

Barry died Sunday at the age of 78. Beverly Fields, the chief of staff and spokeswoman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, said in an e-mail Sunday that the office has received Barry’s body. Fields said that’s routine when someone dies within 24 hours of arriving at a hospital. She said an examination will be performed.

Fields said the cause and manner of death will be released when the autopsy is complete. She did not say when that might be.
