FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Fayetteville’s first gun buyback event collected so many weapons that police had to give IOUs after about two hours.

The Fayetteville Observer reports (https://bit.ly/1vCjUDd) that more than 250 guns were collected during the event sparked by a rash of fatal local shootings.

People who surrendered an assault-style weapon or handgun on Saturday got a $200 prepaid gift card. A surrendered rifle or shotgun produced a $150 gift card.

Fayetteville police distributed $30,000 in gift cards and another $20,000 in IOUs for gift cards provided through the mail or by pick up.

The police department provided about $25,000 from money that convicted criminals forfeited as part of their sentences, while more funds came from donations.
