CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - An Illinois woman is among 32 U.S. winners of this year’s Rhodes scholarships.

Rachel Harmon of Champaign is a senior majoring in industrial and labor relations at Cornell University in New York.

Her name and those of the other U.S. winners were announced Sunday by the Rhodes Trust.

A statement from the Rhodes Trust says Harmon was an AmeriCorps volunteer before college. She worked as a reading tutor at an all-black elementary school in the Mississippi Delta.

The Rhodes Scholars program was established in 1902 in the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes. It’s one of the most prestigious academic awards for college students.

Recipients receive funding to study at the University of Oxford in England.
