NEW YORK (AP) - The 32 Rhodes scholars headed to Oxford University next year include three from New York state.

The scholarships announced Sunday cover expenses for study at the prestigious university in England.

Joseph Barrett from Port Washington, Long Island graduated from Princeton University with a major in history and a minor in South Asian Studies. His focus is prison education and reform.

Matthew Townsend of Chappaqua (CHAP’-uh-kwah) in Westchester County is a senior at Yale University majoring in molecular, cellular and developmental biology. His special interest is obesity-related diseases. He’s also a starting forward on Yale’s basketball team.

Gabriel Zucker from Brooklyn graduated from Yale with majors in ethics, politics, economics and music. For the past year, he’s been associate director of the Connecticut Heroes Project, a campaign to end veteran homelessness.
