WINONA, Texas (AP) - Firefighters say a former elementary school in East Texas has been destroyed in a blaze that took eight departments to extinguish and left one responder injured.

Smith County Fire Marshal Jay Brooks tells KLTV-TV (https://bit.ly/1C3DBaG ) about 40 firefighters responded to the former Winona Elementary School on Sunday after a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the building.

Brooks says responders had problems getting water to the fire, which spread through the attic. He described the injury to the firefighter as minor.

It’s unclear what started the fire.

The marshal’s office is investigating.
