MELVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Police have arrested a man for street racing on Long Island.

Police say an officer responded to Melville Park Road in Melville at 11:15 p.m. Sunday where about 70 vehicles were gathered and two cars were preparing to race.

Police say the spectators and one of the drivers fled after seeing the officer. The other driver, Fernando Romero-Alvarado, was arrested after trying to flee.

He faces charges of unauthorized speed contest, reckless driving and unlawfully fleeing a police officer. His car was impounded.

It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer.
