WEST COVINA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a suspect in a fatal shooting was shot to death by West Covina police after he opened fire on officers during a foot chase, hitting and wounding a police dog.

Corporal Rudy Lopez says a search was launched after the body of a man who had been fatally shot was found late Sunday night.

Lopez tells KABC-TV the male suspect was located on a rooftop by a sheriff’s helicopter crew.

Lopez says after he jumped down and ran, the suspect turned and shot at pursuing officers, striking a police dog.

The corporal says that’s when officers opened fire, killing the suspect. He has not been identified.

Lopez says the dog, named Rico, was taken into surgery for treatment of a gunshot wound.

Rico has been with the department for a year.
