PACIFICA, Calif. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard says it is searching for a surfer last seen in the water off Pacifica south of San Francisco.

The Coast Guard said in a statement Sunday night that it launched a helicopter and boat from its San Francisco sector just before 5 p.m. after a report that a surfer in a black suit was seen face down in the water 100 yards off Rockaway Beach in Pacifica.

The Pacifica Fire Department was first to respond to the scene and was also working in the search for the surfer who had not been found some four hours later.

Authorities were also working to identify the surfer and encouraged anyone who might know to come forward.
