MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Wild winds off Malibu blew six kayakers out so far to sea that a squid-fishing fleet had to come to their rescue.

City News Service reports that the Santa Ana winds with consistent gusts above 50 mph sent the kayakers southward out to sea on Sunday.

But they were blown into an area where a large fleet of squid-fishing boats had gathered to take advantage of ocean currents.

The squid boats snared at least two of the kayakers to keep them from being blown further out.

Lifeguards from Los Angeles and Ventura counties then used Jet Ski-style personal watercraft to tow the kayakers back to shore.

No injuries were reported.
