SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Avalanche Center says the danger of slides is considerable in mountains near Salt Lake and Provo.

The center reports on its Web site that a backcountry skier triggered a deep, wide avalanche west of Brighton Ski Resort Thursday, though he was not caught in the slide.

Authorities recommend using caution in choosing terrain and avoiding slopes steeper than 30 degrees above 9,500 feet in elevation.

Avalanche danger is considered moderate at higher elevations elsewhere in the state, in the Uinta (YOO-in-tah), Ogden and Logan-area mountains.
